Short Story; Are the gods sexist? Why not a woman?

"The odogwu Abi (Prime minister) of this community can never be a woman, chief otumotu blunted out sharply, it is a taboo and the gods can never see that happen". Atikwam stood still, a slender woman in her mid-fifty with a pitch-black skin and hair shortly and neatly trimmed. This was the first time the people chose a woman for this position, it wasn't a choice even, it was their last resort. Ajimi-Eto the last Odogwu Abi didn't just break the people trust about things to say, do or provide, he made them realize they needed some kind of change, so was all his predecessors. The people unanimous vote to appoint a woman wasn't based on her capacity and qualifications even as a very educated woman but because she's a woman, if be a woman perhaps more flexible. Chief Otumotu continued " is a taboo and gross sacrilege, the gods must never be tempted, a woman cannot defend the tradition of our people and cannot present the kola-nut in our Obiogwa (meeting place), we better leave the position vacant than for a woman to become the Odogwu Abbi". Chief Peter Orjie spoke whisking one of his eyes in interregnum as usual, " People forget history so quickly, remember those who instigated crisis and stole in our community few years, died and was buried in canoe because the gods were angry with them and this is thesame calamity you would want to bring upon yourselves if a woman becomes the Odogwu Abbi". Chief Ikeagune stood and greeted the counsel and the Okpala Uku, repeating the tittle "Oyewiaosa" (He that owes all) before speaking " since I was a child, I have not seen a female chief, neither as Okpala-uku or Odogwu Abbi but also I don't know a rule forbidding women to act as such and nevertheless the gods only forbid the things our rules guides us against, if this is what our people need then we should look into it howbeit we must remember why our people chose a woman to represent them alas they will understand the hard way".

The Okpala-uku gave more confused stare, Atikwam who's still standing, waiting for the counsel who were talking about her, right in front of her like it was her absent, to reach a decision, the elders at this point divided into two groups in their sited positions, most murmuring it's a taboo, is not possible, never!", the other few commenting on the favor of a woman Prime minister. The Okpala-uku spoke finally, " the gods are not blind, they can see and solely requires the best. And this is the problem, what makes a person chosen by the gods as the best?, is it because is a man or a woman?, is it that the gods requires solely a best man only, for women cannot be the best? why can't a woman be the best for the gods?. let's go home and sleep on this and the next market day, we shall find our answers".
